The Unbearable Lightness of Being

...and that is the cruelest part of this, this human life. First it fills you with love, and then it takes that love away, and leaves you instead with a profound, empty sadness.

Pudd'nhead Wilson's Calendar

"If you take in a starving dog, and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principle difference between a man and a dog."

Crunch Time for 8664

Blogging live from 8664 HQ during the first-Friday Gallery Hop. We figured that after Christmas in the cold of early January, nobody'd be interested in Gallery Hopping. But it's in the 60s outside, I have the door open, and Yuppies who live in the upscale condos next to our office have been shuffling by and muttering as they pitch their trash in the large green standard cans just beside our entrance. We need thousands more of them to do exactly the same.
.
The holidays now mercifully past, we're going to spend most of our efforts button-holing state legislators prior to the KY General Assembly session in early February. They're going to have to reckon with the hard reality that there isn't enough in their budget to fund the newly-revised astronomical cost of the Bridges Project - $3.9 Billion Bucks. Now's our chance to convince them that there's a better way. But we don't have much time...
.
While it's quiet I'm gonna work on an editorial reply to the really dreadful Q&A that our illustrious Mayor gave to LEO this week. When asked about 8664 he said, among other things, that he "couldn't base decisions on aesthetics." Hoo boy! Is this what we're up against? I must write a hard-hitting reply. But first I'm gonna read Dave Barry.

NYC Emergency

In NYC all week. I still remember the sirens and the noise from my first visit to this crazy place - so many years ago that I don't remember when it was. I do remember describing New York (to myself) as one giant non-stop emergency. Looking back at what this place has been through in the interim, I guess that I was right.
